Alight Analytics Highlights How It Leverages Tableau Software

Dan Duncan speaks at the KC Tableau User Group on May 3, 2018.

Alight Analytics was proud to host a sold-out meeting of the Kansas City Tableau User Group on May 3.

Every quarter, KC TUG brings together the region’s Tableau users for an afternoon of talks, demos and product news. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Zen Master or someone who’s still learning the ins and outs of Tableau. KC TUG is a great way to enhance your skill set, learn from other users and get inspired to tackle your next big project.

Dan Duncan speaks at the KC Tableau User Group on May 3, 2018.Dan Duncan, Alight’s manager of reporting solutions, was a featured speaker at this quarter’s event. He showcased a pair of high-impact marketing dashboards that Alight recently developed.

One was for a client that generates billions of data points in a typical month. Alight built a dashboard that condenses everything into a set of easy-to-understand KPIs.

In a typical month, one of the client’s KPIs might start in the millions but grow into the billions. With Tableau, Dan was able to create labels and formatting that dynamically change to match the number being visualized.

The same dashboard also features two different date filters. The standard setting shows data for four weeks trailing, but users can also select their own start and end dates.

That’s one of the great things about Tableau, Dan said. If you’ve got an idea for a visualization — and the persistence to see it through — there’s almost always a way to build it in Tableau.

It helps that Tableau has nurtured a community of users who are open to sharing advice. A wealth of how-to information is available online.

Here at Alight, we employ an entire team that uses Tableau every day. So if one person gets stuck on a particularly challenging problem, Dan said, the team will get everyone into a room and bounce ideas off each other. Sometimes, a different perspective is all you need to find the right solution.
